Innovations
The CIWCE is a pioneering institution in Pakistan, which has introduced innovative low cost technologies for addressing the safety, health and environmental problems faced by workers particularly the vulnerable segments of the workforce like women, young persons and children. Here we would like to introduce the major breakthroughs we have achieved in addressing the workplace health and safety problems of vulnerable workers through low cost innovations:
- Ergonomic Loom for Carpet Weavers
- Video about Ergonomic Loom
- Posters about Ergonomic Loom
Millions of workers, mostly girls and women work on carpet weaving looms, which create grave health and safety hazards for them. The CIWCE with the help of ILO, designed an award winning carpet weaving loom, which helps mitigate the problems of these workers Download the brochure about ergonomic carpet loom to learn more about it.
Low cost workplace improvements for the glass bangle making workers in Hyderabad
In December, 2007, the Centre for the Improvement of Working Conditions and Environment in the Labour Punjab (CIWCE) was invited by the ILO’s Timebound Programme to improve occupational health and safety in this sector. A specific objective was to improve the working conditions of young and adult workers by making the work less or nonhazardous. For this purpose, a number of interventions were carried out by CIWCE. Improved workshops for Surgical Instruments Manufacturers
Manufacture of surgical instruments is an important export oriented industry of Pakistan. Children, young workers and adults are exposed to hazardous conditions in the surgical workshops, resulting in diseases and accidents. On the request of ILO, the CIWCE established model workshops in Sialkot city to demonstrate low cost solutions to the health and safety problems in this sector.
